Think last year at this time was the most scary race I had ever done.. at least until then. Had wanted to do it the year before but was injured and actually had stopped running for a little bit. .. which probably added to the fear factor... And the fact that it was 94 degrees that day did not go unnoticed! Hydration and heat stroke and those kinds of thoughts floating around with those pesky butterflies.
But all turned out well, and did it again!!!!
Both Carol and I had issues... Carol's hip was bothering her and last weeks trail run did not go well for her. My calf has been on and off bothering me since Newport 10M ... a whole month ago. I've rested, foam rolled. chiro has worked on it... and each time I think it's better, something else tweaks it the wrong way. So we went into this race each saying we wouldn't kill ourselves. We'd trust in what we had done earlier on the weekend and just take it slow and steady. And that's exactly what we did!
And by playing it smart... both of us got PRs! Pretty cool considering we really didn't kill it at all. Looking back on last years timing, I must have really gone pretty fast on those first 3 miles, because the last mile was half run/half walk for me, but the difference in each race was only about 2 minutes. But enough with the analyzing.
I'm happy with my time of 1:05:??... and I'm really, really impressed with Carol's time. She has gotten stronger and faster this year and it's very apparent. She beat her time from last year by about 12 minutes... (will edit with exact # later). We played it smart with our respective limitations and a week later, I feel fantastic. Carol is going to get that hip checked at the Chiro.... which reminds me of another post yet to write... some fantastic results when I finally went to a Chiro..
William and Brandon joined us and they did awesome.. both coming in the 50-minute range. Neither had extensively prepped either nutritionally or physically with a less than optimal running lunch that day; which I'm sure they will learn from. But I was totally impressed by both of them.
Harriet won 2nd in her age group as usual. I know she'd love to take top spot on that podium, and I absolutely love hearing about the race from her perspective, but although I think there was some disappointment on her part, I remain in awe of her and her abilities!
All in all... a fantastic race. Happy with time. Butterflies were held at bay. And pretty happy knowing that I'm at the fitness level where I can go out and with confidence run a 10K in just over an hour while nursing an overused calf.... Next goal... reel in the time to be even closer to the hour mark???
